The ability of these particles to penetrate the magnetic field depends upon their energy. As Figure 10.2 shows, most (98%) of the charged particles are deflected by the magnetosphere.

So how do the charged particles get into the atmosphere to cause the aurora? Amazingly enough, many of them are thought to enter from behind the Earth—as shown in Figure 10.2.

The aurora is a relatively low-level phenomenon, occurring mostly at an altitude of 50–60 mi. According to scientists the aurora rarely comes closer to the Earth than 60 km. When an aurora appears to touch the horizon it is about 1,000 km away and at an altitude of approximately 100 km.4 The aurora occurs more frequently in some areas than others. This can be plotted on a map.

AURORAL ZONE AND OVAL

The Auroral Zone is a belt which encircles the polar regions. This is the geographical area in which auroras occur. The aurora occurs more frequently in some places than in others. In Figure 10.3 we can see the various lines showing the number of days each year when the aurora can be seen in Alaska and Canada. The dark dotted line shows that the aurora here is seen approximately 100 days of each year. The northern auroral zone is approximately 23° of latitude in radius (1,600 mi).5
